Australian High Commissioner's visit announces new partnerships between Australia and Seychelles

During a working level visit to Seychelles this week, Australia’s High Commissioner Ms Jenny Dee announced the strengthening of Australian and Seychelles partnerships through the recent signing of two Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) between AUSTRAC, Australia’s financial intelligence agency, and the Seychelles Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) and between the Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA).

The visit coincided with a key event organised by the Seychelles Australian Alumni Association bringing together local stakeholders to discuss challenges and priorities for community based drug prevention for young people.

The High Commissioner also attended the official launch of an aquaponics system at Perseverance Primary School supported by the Wildlife Clubs of Seychelles with the assistance of the University of Seychelles.

Commenting at the events Ms Dee said “Australia is committed to supporting its global alumni network. We are pleased that through the Australian Alumni Association in Seychelles we have been able to engage with the community on such an important issue as the prevention of drug use among youth, a challenge for all our countries.”

“The Australian High Commission was also pleased to support the Wildlife Clubs of Seychelles to develop an aquaponics system at Perseverance Primary School, an innovative way to promote food security and sustainable water management through the use of smart agricultural technologies. Projects such as this that make use of education for sustainable development are extremely important, particularly when they involve our young leaders of tomorrow.”

Ms Dee met with the President of Seychelles, HE Mr Danny Faure, Ministers and Heads of institutions to discuss bilateral and regional priorities and also participated in an NGO roundtable convened by the Seychelles Ombudsperson and Human Rights Commission with local NGOs to discuss Australia’s international human rights agenda and listen to human rights issues in Seychelles.

The Seychelles Chamber of Commerce also hosted a roundtable with Australian and Seychellois business representatives and government officials to discuss challenges and opportunities to build the commercial links between the two countries.
