Australian High Commissioner Ms Jenny Dee hosted a welcome reception on 21 July at the Australian Residence for delegates from Australia, Africa and Mauritius participating in the first Australia Africa Universities Network (AAUN) Forum being held in Mauritius from 22 to 23 July 2019.
The Forum has attracted participation of over 45 foreign delegates from 7 Australian universities, 7 African universities and senior representation from the Australian Trade and Investment Commission.
During the two day forum where the Mauritian Minister of Education and Human Resources, Tertiary Education and Scientific Research Hon Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun will deliver a keynote address on international partnerships, delegates will discuss how the Australia Africa Universities Network can help contribute to advancing higher education and research with collaborative projects to fill knowledge gaps in priority sectors.
The Forum will focus on the blue economy, health, digital technologies and food security.
“The Australian Government is committed to deepening cooperation with countries in Africa and the AAUN is an excellent platform to encourage international collaboration amongst our academics and researchers that will help our governments and decision makers develop sound evidence-based policies for the sustainable development of priority sectors,” Ms Dee said.
Through the Australia Awards in Africa program, the Australian Government is working with governments across Africa, including Mauritius, to support emerging leaders to contribute to the economic and social development of their countries.
The Australia Africa Universities Network (AAUN) was launched on 17 July 2012 with the help of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade with the aim of helping connect researchers and academics in Australia and Africa through institutional partnerships in order to address challenges facing both continents. Since its establishment, the AAUN has successfully supported 55 research programs and projects across Australia and Africa.
