Australian High Commission promotes integrity and ethical capacity of Prison Officers within the Republic of Mauritius

On 3 December 2020, the Australian High Commission and Transparency Mauritius in collaboration with the Mauritius Prison Services launched an Ethics Guide for Prison Officers.

The launching ceremony took place in the presence of the Hon Maneesh Gobin, Attorney General and Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, HE Dr Kate O’Shaughnessy, Australian High Commissioner and Mr K.M. Nobin, PMSM, Commissioner of Prisons.

Since 2018, Transparency Mauritius has benefitted from the Australian Direct Aid Program (DAP) funding to implement a project to promote ethics and good governance in the Mauritius Police and Prison Services. Under the Australian funded program, some 1000 Police officers and over 500 Prison Officers were trained in ethics and human rights-based management in both Mauritius and Rodrigues. These training sessions were aimed at re-enforcing ethical values such as honesty, trustworthiness and commitment. Inculcating such values within law enforcement institutions contributes to an improved service to the public and encourages better role models for the people in rehabilitation.

During a recent visit, High Commissioner O’Shaughnessy was pleased to see that Police Officers in Rodrigues were also actively participating in this human rights’ project. On the Australian contribution, the High Commissioner said: “Australia’s commitment to human rights is longstanding: we were an original signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 and sat on the United Nations Human Rights Council from 2018-2020.  Working with Transparency Mauritius and the Mauritian Government on this project has been a real privilege, as well as a practical example of our ongoing commitment to human rights. "

Through its Aid Program, the Australian High Commission continues to support non-profit organisations working in local communities in Mauritius (including Rodrigues), Comoros and Madagascar on activities that support sustainable and inclusive development targeting key UN Sustainable Development Goals.
